Scoring Notes

  • We will only score a person after they have two race scores within a division (Ultra or Trail). This includes scoring for teams. So, a team member with less than 2 scores will not be applied to team totals.
  • We will only score your top four race scores within a division (Ultra or Trail).
  • Men and Women are scored separately, except in the Last-Runner-Standing, where there is only one non-gender-specific winner for basing all race scores from.
  • Scoring Formulas: as follows…

DISTANCE based points formula. This is based on the pre-set race distance. (ex: 10K, 100M)

score = (Wt / Yt) * Bp

Wt = winning time (gender specific: m&f)
Yt = your time
Bp – base points

  • Ultra division:
    • 100 Bp if >=100M
    • 90 Bp if >=62M & <100M — (100k)
    • 85 Bp if >=50M & <62M
    • 80 Bp if >26.2M & <50M — (45k, 50k, 60k)
  • Trail division:
    • 100 Bp if >=25M & <=26.2M — (marathon)
    • 95 Bp if >=18.6M & <25M — (30k, 35k, 40k)
    • 90 Bp if >=13.1M & <18.6M — (1/2marathon, 25k)
    • 85 Bp if >=6.2M & <13.1M — (10k, 15k, 20k)
    • 75 Bp if <6.2M (5k)

TIME based points formula: This is based on the pre-set race limit, not the time you ran. (ex: 6 hour, 24 hour races)

score = (Yd / Wd) * Bp

Yd – your distance
Wd – winning distance (gender specific: m&f)
Bp – base points

  • Ultra division:
    • 100 Bp if >=24hr
    • 90 Bp if >=12hr & <24hr
    • 85 Bp if >=9hr & <12hr
    • 80 Bp if >=6hr & <9hr
  • Trail division:
    • 100 Bp if >=5hrs & <6hrs
    • 90 Bp if >=3hrs & <5hrs
    • 75 Bp if >=2hrs & <3hrs
    • 70 Bp if <2hrs

Last-Runner-Standing (LRS) points formula (Repetitive laps on a schedule until one runner remains). The distance the winner runs determines Bp and if the race is Ultra or Trail.

score = (Yd / Wd) * Bp

Yd – your distance
Wd – winning distance (NOT gender specific)
Bp – base points

  • Ultra division:
    • 100 Bp if >= 100M
    • 90 Bp if >=62M & <100M — (100k)
    • 85 Bp if >=50M & <62M
    • 80 Bp if >26.2M & <50M — (45k, 50k, 60k)
  • Trail division:
    • 100 Bp if >=25M & <=26.2M — (marathon)
    • 95 Bp if >=18.6M & <25M — (30k, 35k, 40k)
    • 90 Bp if >=13.1M & <18.6M — (1/2marathon, 25k)
    • 85 Bp if >=6.2M & <13.1M — (10k, 15k, 20k)
    • 75 Bp if <6.2M (5k)

EPIC race bonus: Two of the Spring series’ races are so competitive, consistently attract an elite group of national and international competitors, that we’ve decided to give an overall 10% base points bonus to ALL series members that finish them: Bandera 100K & Rocky Raccoon 100M.

score = ((Wt / Yt) * Bp) + Epic

  • if Bp 100, Epic = 10 (ex: if RR100M, score + 10)
  • if Bp 95, Epic = 9.5
  • if Bp 90, Epic = 9.0 (ex: if B100K, score + 9)
  • if Bp 85, Epic = 8.5
  • if Bp 80, Epic = 8.0
  • if Bp 75, Epic = 7.5

(ex: if score is 80.4321, add 10 points, 90.4321)

SMALL race adjustment: On the flip-side of the coin to the above rule, we will include (a small points decrease) to races that only less than 10  finishers per gender.

score = ((Wt / Yt) x Bp) – Small

  • if Bp 100, Small = 9.0 (ex: if XT26m, score – 9.0)
  • if Bp 95, Small = 8.5
  • if Bp 90, Small = 8.0
  • if Bp 85, Small = 7.6 (ex: if BBU50M, score – 7.6)
  • if Bp 80, Small = 7.2 (ex: if PW50K, score – 7.2)
  • if Bp 75, Small = 6.7

(ex: if score is 65.4321, subtract 7.6 points, 57.8321

Early Starters, Underachievers, & Overachievers: We know that some races allow runners to start early, drop down to a shorter distance after you have started, or step up to a longer distance after you have started. The thing is, if the race director allows it, and scores these people along with all the others, then we do too.

Multi-Race Repeat-Runner Events: In some cases, a series member race director will offer multiple races in a single event (i.e.: in a single day, or weekend, etc.) that are open to repeated entry by the SAME runner (i.e.: Tejas Trail’s: Trail Running Festival). The Championship Series wants to encourage enthusiastic participation in these types of events but, at the same time, does not want to potentially “wrap-up” a Spring or Fall series points-wise by accumulating so many points in a single event day or weekend. So, we will score all eligible races in a multi-race event, then take a runner’s single best race and use that to score their series points, as well as Team contribution points.

Greater-than 100 Mile Races, Stage Races, Relays: At this time, we have decided not to over-complicate the series’ distance formula by adding features like course difficulty judgments, race-type and/or exotic distance comparisons, etc., etc. Races that are over 100 miles (mainly applying to the Nomad Division, since the current race series calendar does not have races in this category) will be scored using the same distance formula using the top 100 base points, and the participant’s time will still be measured as a percentage of the winner’s time. Stage races will be treated the same as a regular race for that cumulative distance. This obviously only works for stage races that rank their finishing participants based on an overall cumulative time.
